Hi Fiona, ya I've learnt my lesson when I almost missed out on Busselton Half Ironman in May. Good thing organizers accepted my appeal for entry.
The WC in Gold Coast is Olympic Distance right? I think I do better in long distance. There is also a Long Distance champs in Perth in October. I think Sofian is going for that. Hmm... I don't know, somehow the thought of racing the world's best and coming out last in the pack, is pretty intimidating for me!
Despite my recent planned 30km but eventually became 20km LSD run, this morning's 42:28 10km was a real confidence booster!

i am like you Kev, i always sign up last minute! i have missed a couple of races here because of that :(
By the way,why don't you sign up for the age group WC in Gold Coast ? i just applied through TRIAM. now waiting for approval.give it a try :)
